Rama a king of Ayodhya was born around 5500 BC in India. Every single major action of his life is a festival for Indians. His birthday, returning to Ayodhya defeating Ravana and everything. No such iconography exists for any other human in the history of mankind across the globe. Surely, that man was historic.
Even now, no human in the world gets so many living documents and texts as Rama got. This takes us to a point that Rama was also a good human being and never a god as he himself told many times in his life. Often it is not said, why was he so great. We summed up ten reasons why he is the only king of the world, whose every single life events are celebrated even now as the festivals.
1. Stopped polygamy
Rama implemented one man one marriage (this is still now a Hindu marriage law). It was Rama who felt the pain of Kausalya and took an oath, “the man is a man who gives his children, only one mother”. He implemented the rule strongly because it was documented explicitly that a king could many wives and could marry anyone they wanted in the kingdom. Not only that Rama started the practice of one man one marriage culture, he also made sure that the women’s honor and dignity are maintained by abolishing the Rapes and sexual violence. It was Rama who gave the rules of married life and the finest tuning required. He destroyed the principle, “putrarthe kriyote varya”, that existed long long before. Manu wrote it down which means "women were population increment machines". Rama never had lust upon other women and never married, even after his wife’s death, the culture we do not see even now, he practiced it 7000 years ago.
2. Equalized classes, races, and species
Rama challenged superstitions. At that time, there were monkey man, human, Gandharva and man-eating near animal like humans called rakshasas, wars among four classes were enormous. Rama brought all classes of people into a singular society. Sabari, the old tribal lady in the forests, who feeds him with fruits tasted first by herself. Guha, a tribal chief, who took him across the river. He was embraced by Rama as his most bellowed friend and brother. Jatayu, the bird king, who was slayed by Ravana, was so dear to Rama. The monkey kings and soldiers, following Sugreeva were of course, his most trusted friends and soldiers. Rama Prays to Lord Brahma and brings back all the killed vanara soldiers alive, at the end of the war. Jaambavanth, the king of bears was another great friend. Vibheeshan, the brother of Ravana became his close disciple and friend. He was included into his family. Rama’s quote, “a man’s caste is defined by his principles of thoughts, not merely by his actions”, “the person who feeds others like a mother could not be cursed”.
3. Beyond kingship “love” to replace “respect”
There was no instance where he created something great only to glorify him, he never created a great palace, even after returning from Lanka. He kept justice & democratic demands always above family and personal interests. Had to commit suicide when his wife died. But he never compromised or revenged. He is a man of one word. Sacrificed his own wife for the justice, went to forest life for fourteen years just to keep his fathers promise. Killed Bali, knowing that he was doing something bad just to keep his promise and regretted later. Finally he had to commit suicide just because the society did not accept him. He was a rebel of his time. The then society rejected him completely. For justice, he punished even Rajpurusha, or kingly family members, and became enemy to them. He developed “police detective” for the first time to gather the actual information of crime before he called his court, so that the truth could be established. His argument with Kaikeyi is amazing, “Vidhdhi Maam Rishibihi thulyam”, “see me as a Rishi”. He argued throughout his life that he must not be considered as a God.
4. Transexual honor
Rama said, "transsexuals are a combined form of Shiva & parvati, So, bless the newborns”. It was Rama who gave them the honor they deserve. Now India has become one of the primary countries in the world to honor “third sex”, but it was Rama who honored this for the first time. Note that Rama grew up not in an isolated palace as shown in the TV shows or movies. There was no big palace of Dasarath. Rama always mixed with the common people just like their son, that is the reason when he left Ayodhya, people of the entire kingdom left with him and wanted to go to the forest and live with him. Such an expression of love comes from a family bondage, not by kingship. He was the first to show that “love” for people is above everything. When he left for the forest exile the transsexuals walked along with him but did not return to Ayodhya, they lived for 14 years outside the Ayodhya waiting for Rama to return. When Rama returned, he brought them and provided the equal status as male and female. This was the first documented official recognition of transexual given as equal status as male and female.
Since then, transexuals were considered the holy form of male+female and their touch and boons were considered as holy as Shiva+Parvati. This is a culture started by Rama, but due to poverty and lack of knowledge, they use bad words, abuse, and torture. Transexuals marriage should be considered as one of the holiest actions of Rama. Hopefully, one day we will be able to return to a true Ram Rajya.
5. “Antodaya”, upliftment until the last man of the society experiences Unified law & order
The last men of the society signifies quality of the society, this was the concept of Rama. His social theory was based on “equalization is evolutionary”, “bahujana hitaya bahujana sukhaya” “a contradictory situation has a clear solution only when it is for greater good, that lasts longer”, which means adopting only those policies which address greater masses. Rama’s kingly house was just like a hut, and it was in the middle of a city along with the other people. He removed all additional powers of the Kingly families forced them to undergo trials with the common people.
6. Rise above provocation and stood Uniquely
Rama conquered anger and bitterness. He showed supreme politeness to Sugreeva and Kaikeyee. Never responded to humiliation with bitterness and anger. It is often said that his biggest weakness was Sita, then why he did not take help from Ayodhya to save his wife and why he was calm and quiet when someone teased her? “Lakshman I know what is right and what is wrong, but I am a king and I do compromise with the view of the people. These are the people who stood by me always,” “I am consciously committing a sin for the people, I cannot do otherwise, as destiny is always collective, never a singular Karma.” He could kill and silence his enemies, but by committing suicide he became the world’s only king who committed suicide because he felt not fit to rule.
7. Fundamentals of religion followed
Rama regretted for killing Ravana, who was a Brahmin. Brahman based knowledge and culture is supreme and Rama established this culture in Ayodhya. He was the only king to do this in the History of the Hindu kings. Rama often said, “The king in whose kingdom the wise men are not protected is not liked by time.” The ten fundamental principles of Dharma he implemented strictly in his kingdom. The action he did after killing Ravana is establishing a Brahmin culture in his kingdom. That was an event which proves that he is a protector of Dharma. His commitment to follow the traditions of Iksvaku dynasty is unstoppable.
8. Protecting the nature, art, culture & science
Most of us do not know that Upanishad’s Basudhaiva Kutumbakam was Rama’s word too. This word is a huge logical boost to those who believe Harappan and Vedic people were the same. Rama's reign had the culture of dances that still survive in south-east Asia (This was also included in Avatar movie), light & shade art, festival of music & color, festival of foods, painting of earthly dyes and medicines. There were water canals both sides of every road in Ayodhya, to moist the flowers beside. Rama inherited extremely good science and technology culture inherited from ancient tradition. Light and shadow drama with hands, which we can still see these art forms all over the world. Boat race, you can see them in Thailand, Kerala. 9. Building infrastructure (Water canal, Govt. transport service, postal system, roads connecting to Gandharva, banara, Raksasha lands)
Rama started unified taxation system across the nation. Maithili rule of land reform (property goes to granddaughter etc, many rules still exist e.g. fraction profit of landowner to farmer,etc.). Entire Hindu land law is his credit. Rama had village councils everywhere and he used to monitor the councils with his supreme class of ministers. He arranged carts for transport of people. He established equal taxation system and particularly concentrated on the Vaisya class for trades across the states. During his rule, there were law and order everywhere in the state. The guilty were always punished, and Rama could by himself checked for justice to be properly delivered. He developed unified protocol for detailed map of the nation and land reform. He created the Ram Setu (A bridge that connects Rameswaram Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka.) and said, “Bridging a barrier is what love is, that’s what destiny writes to eliminate sin”. His land reform rules were followed for a long time, historically there were several mentions of his rules.

Respect for enemy (By saying “Ravana was the greatest warrior the time has ever seen”, & and by building Rameswaram temple on Pamban Island). Rama is the creator of the word “motherland” (“Land is mother, greater than the heaven”). The last but not the least, he was a great warrior. He could kill Ravana with a single shot, but he warned him with a bow. He didn’t kill unwarned enemies. He took entire south Asia under his rule. After Bharatha he was the King who did Aswamedha Jagna and brought entire Indian sub-continent as a singular administrative domain. He left Golden Lanka and said “Janani Janmabhumischa, Sargadapi Gariyasi” and wanted to return to Ayodhya. His quotes are still there in the minds of the people because Rama is a man of action.
